Dutch Oven Apple Dumplings back to top
This is a car camping favorite along with s'mores below. Cooking with a dutch over cooking using a campfire has many possibilities. This is one of the simpler ones. A dutch oven is usually a large cast iron pot with a solid lid and thick wire handle. You cook in it by creating hot coals in your campfire then placing the dutch oven directly into the coals. You also take some coals and place them on the lid generating heat from above and below. Be careful not to get ashes in food if checking the contents while in fire. Use large branch through carrying handle to move oven in and out of fire.

- Liberally place pats of butter throughout the mix and on biscuits
- Place in fire with plenty of coals on top for 30 minutes or biscuits golden brown on top

S'mores back to top
Oh yeah! S'mores have to be the most famous of camping of treats. Everyone tends to have their own method for roasting a perfect marshmallow. With children be careful of flame outs, dropsies, and burnt tongues. The roasting skewers are not swords or lightsabers. The best method for a hot, crispy, golden brown marshmallow is to stay far away from flames and slowly rotate it near the hot coals.
